PEPPERMINTS (start in red yarn; make two):
If you prefer the printable, premium PDF, you can find it HERE. Thank you for supporting my designs!
*Note: You can also start in white yarn to create a slightly different looking peppermint.

*Note: Do not carry over the yarn. Instead, let it hang with some slack between each color change. The backside of the piece will look like this after round 7:

-
Rnd 1: Make a slipknot and ch 2. Working into the 2nd ch from the hook, make 8 sc. [8]
-
Rnd 2: Alternate between red and white yarn. *[white] inc, [red] inc* x4 [16]
-
Rnd 3: *[white] sc, inc, [red] sc, inc* x4 [24]
-
Rnd 4: *[white] inc, 2 sc [red] inc, 2 sc* x4 [32]
-
Rnd 5: *[white] inc, 3 sc, [red] inc, 3 sc* x4 [40]
- Rnds 6-7 (2 rnds total): *[white] 5 sc, [red] 5 sc* x4 [40]
In the next round, we will begin making the inner part of the earmuff. Cut the white yarn and continue in red only.
- Rnd 8: ch 5, skip 5 sts, (blo) – sc all around [40]

- Rnd 9: (3 sc, dec) x8. When you reach the skipped sts, work regular decreases in the back loops only. [32]
- Rnd 10: (2 sc, dec) x8 [24]
- Rnd 11: (sc, dec) x8 [16]
Lightly stuff.
- Rnd 12: (dec) x8 [8]
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Go through the flo and pull the hole closed.

HEADBAND (in red yarn):
- Rnd 1: Leave a long tail (for sewing to the ear muff) before making a slipknot and ch 5. Working into the second ch from the hook, make 4 sc. Work on the other side of the ch and make another 4 sc [8]
-
Rnds 2-40 (39 rnds total): sc all around [8]
- Note: Modify the rounds as needed, checking the length frequently against the headband.

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Insert the headband into the tube and whipstitch the opening closed.
ASSEMBLY:
-
Step 1: Place the band on the head and mark both sides where the top of the ears are with stitch markers. For my measurements, I marked 3 rounds from each end.
- Note: If this is for a child, the ends of the band will be inserted into the earmuffs a few rounds deeper.
- Note: If this is for a child, the ends of the band will be inserted into the earmuffs a few rounds deeper.
- Step 2: Insert the band into the openings of both peppermints.
- Step 3: Use the yarn needle and sew along the marked rounds of the band to the opening on each peppermint earmuff.

- Step 4: Weave in any remaining ends.

You're finished!
