Free Crochet Pattern - Santa Hat

Few things are sweeter than these Mommy-and-me Santa hats! (except…maybe some delicious hot cocoa).

-We will be working in joined rounds for the hat and a spiral for the pom pom. 

-The chain in each rnd will count as the first st.

-Measurements: Toddler hat - 13 in. x 9 in. [~33 cm x 23 cm], Child/Adult hat -16 in. x 12 in. [~41 cm x ~30 cm]

-Gauge: ~14 sts in 8 rnds in 4 in. x 4 in. [~10 cm x ~10 cm]

*Note: This hat is meant to be worn slouchy! If you prefer a tighter fit, modify as needed.

MATERIALS

  • 6 mm hook
  • 10 mm hook
  • #4 medium worsted yarn in your main color 
    • *Note: You will need 2 of each skein to make 1 of each size. 
    • Here, I’m using Simply Soft Caron in Soft Pink [57 g for the toddler hat and 92 g for the child/adult hat]

  • #7 jumbo fluffy yarn in white
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Markers
  • Yarn Needle


TERMS

  • ch: chain

  • dc: double crochet

  • dc-inc: double crochet increase 

  • dec: (invisible) decrease

  • flo: front loops only

  • inc: sc increase

  • sc: single crochet

  • st(s): stitch

  • slst: slip stitch

  • rnd(s): round(s)

  • [#]: stitch count

  • (…) x# – repeat the instructions within the parentheses # of times


Pom Pom (in fluffy yarn and 10 mm hook) 

*Tip: Don’t skip using the stitch marker. This yarn is very forgiving, but you can feel for the stitches and crochet very loosely if you need to count your stitches!

 

Rnd 1: Make a magic circle and (sc) x6 [6]

 

Rnd 2: (sc, inc) x3 [9]

 

Rnd 3: sc all around [9] 

 

Rnd 4: (sc, dec) x3 [6] 

 

No need to stuff as this yarn is already very bulky. Fasten off. 

 

Thread your needle and sew through the flo and cinch the hole closed. 

 

We will use the yarn tail we leave at the start of the hat to sew the pom pom to the top.

 

 

Toddler Hat (starting in main color and 6 mm hook) 

Rnd 1: Leave a foot of yarn for sewing the pom pom and make a magic circle and ch 2. This will count as your first dc. Make 9 dc, slst into the first st. [10]

 

Rnd 2: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next, (dc-inc, dc) x4, slst into the first st [15]

 

Rnds 3-4 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [15]

 

Rnd 5: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 2 sts, (dc-inc, 2 dc) x4, slst into the first st [20]

 

Rnds 6-7 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [20]

 

Rnd 8: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 3 sts, (dc-inc, 3 dc) x4, slst into the first st [25]

 

Rnds 9-10 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [25]

 

Rnds 11: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 4 sts, (dc-inc, 4 dc) x4, slst into the first st [30]

 

Rnds 12-13 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [30]

 

Rnd 14: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 5 sts, (dc-inc, 5 dc) x4, slst into the first st [35]

 

Rnds 15-16 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [35]

 

Rnd 17: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 6 sts, (dc-inc, 6 dc) x4, slst into the first st [40]

 

Rnds 18-19 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [40]

 

Rnd 20: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 7 sts, (dc-inc, 7 dc) x4, slst into the first st [45]

 

Rnds 21-22 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [45]

 

Rnd 23: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 8 sts, (dc-inc, 8 dc) x4, slst into the first st [50]

 

Rnds 24-25 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [50]

 

Rnd 26: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 9 sts, (dc-inc, 9 dc) x4, slst into the first st [55]

 

At this point, check the length. Depending on your gauge, you may want to stop here. 

 

Rnds 27-28 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [55]

 

Rnd 29: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 10 sts, (dc-inc, 10 dc) x4, slst into the first st [60]

 

Fasten off the main color and leave a short tail to crochet over – or – to weave in at the end.

 

Change to a 10 mm hook and join the fluffy yarn. 

 

Rnd 30: ch 2, skip the next st, dc into the next. Continue to dc in every other st around the whole hat. slst into the first st. 

 

Fasten off and weave in your ends. 

 

*Note: This yarn is significantly thicker than the yarn you will be using for your main color and so we are skipping stitches to prevent scrunching. 

 

 

Child/Adult Hat (starting in main color and 6 mm hook)

 

Rnd 1: Leave a foot of yarn for sewing and make a magic circle and ch 2. This will count as your first dc. Make 11 dc, slst into the first st. [12]

 

Rnd 2: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next, (dc-inc, dc) x5, slst into the first st [18]

 

Rnds 3-4 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [18]

 

Rnd 5: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 2 sts, (dc-inc, 2 dc) x5, slst into the first st [24]

 

Rnds 6-7 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [24]

 

Rnd 8: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 3 sts, (dc-inc, 3 dc) x5, slst into the first st [30]

 

Rnds 9-10 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [30]

 

Rnd 11: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 4 sts, (dc-inc, 4 dc) x5, slst into the first st [36]

 

Rnds 12-13 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [36]

 

Rnd 14: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 5 sts, (dc-inc, 5 dc) x5, slst into the first st [42]

 

Rnds 15-16 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [42]

 

Rnd 17: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 6 sts, (dc-inc, 6 dc) x5, slst into the first st [48]

 

Rnds 18-19 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [48]

 

Rnd 20: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 7 sts, (dc-inc, 7 dc) x5, slst into the first st [54]

 

Rnds 21-22 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [54]

 

Rnd 23: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 8 sts, (dc-inc, 8 dc) x5, slst into the first st [60]

 

Rnds 24-25 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [60]

 

Rnd 26: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 9 sts, (dc-inc, 9 dc) x5, slst into the first st [66]

 

Rnds 27-28 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [66]

 

At this point, check the length. Depending on your gauge, you may want to stop here. 

 

Rnd 29: ch 2, dc into the same st, dc into the next 10 sts, (dc-inc, 10 dc) x5, slst into the first st [72]

 

Rnds 30-31 (2 rnds total): ch 2, dc all around, slst into the first st [72]

 

Fasten off the main color and leave a short tail to crochet over – or – to weave in at the end.

 

Change to a 10 mm hook and continue in the fluffy yarn. 

 

Rnds 32-33 (2 rnds total): ch 2, skip the next st, dc into the next. Continue to dc in every other st around the whole hat. slst into the first st. 

 

*Note: This yarn is significantly thicker than the yarn you will be using for your main color and so are skipping stitches to prevent scrunching. 

 
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
