Hey everyone, it’s Amy from curiouspapaya. My favorite season is upon us… Summer! The hot weather calls for some refreshing fruit. This beginner-friendly project includes instructions for 7 different fruit-themed hair accessories. What a way to add a bright pop of color to complete your look!

MATERIALS:
- Clover Amour Crochet Hook (1.75 mm)
- #2 Sport-weight yarn in different colors. Here, I mixed and matched from various brands including Paintbox, Yarn and Colors, and Hobbii. See the chart below)
- Embroidery thread in white, brown, and black
- Scissors
- Stitch Marker
- Yarn Needle
- Hot Glue (or sewing thread and needle)
- Hair pins or ties
- (For the hair ties) Felt matching the color of your fruit slice
TERMS:
- Ch - chain
- Dc - double crochet
- Dc inc - double crochet increase
- Inc - increase
- Sc – single crochet
- St(s) – stitch
- Slst – slip stitch
- Rnd(s) – round(s)
- [#] – stitch count
- (…) x # – repeat the instructions within the parentheses # of times
NOTES/TIPS:
*We will be joining rounds.
*The chain will count as the first st in each rnd.
*You will want your fruit slice to be about the length of the hair pin. Depending on your tension, you may need to modify this pattern with additional rounds or with a different hook size.
*The base pattern used for the kiwi is slightly larger than the base pattern for the lemon. I recommend making the larger fruit slices into hair ties vs. pins!
*Measurement: ~2 in. x 1 in. if using the prescribed materials.

Lemon/Lime/Orange/Watermelon (starting in main color):
Rnd 1: Make a magic circle and ch 2. This will count as your first st. Make 11 dc. slst into the first st. [12]
Rnd 2: ch 2, dc into the same st. (dc inc) x11. slst into the first st. [24]
Rnd 3: In white yarn, ch 1. sc into the same st. sc into the next. (sc inc, sc) x11. slst into the first st. [36]
Rnd 4: In the corresponding peel color, ch 1.
Insert a stitch marker to hold your place and remove your hook as we work on the seeds.
Fasten off the main color and the white and leave short tails - we will bury them once we sc the fruit slice closed.
Rnd 4 (cont.): Fold the circle in half. Going through both edges, sc the fruit slice closed into a semi-circle shape. Tuck the yarn tails in as you work.
Fasten off and leave a short tail to bury into the fruit slice. Check to make sure it is the length of the pin. [image below]
Apple/Dragon Fruit/Kiwi (starting in main color):
*Note: For kiwi, begin rnd 1 in white and change to green in rnd 2. For the apple and dragon fruit, use the main color for rnds 1-3.

Apple Seeds: Create a single apple seed in brown embroidery thread.
Dragon Fruit Seeds: Create a bunch of seeds by going random directions in black embroidery thread.
Kiwi Seeds: Create short lines for the seeds in black embroidery thread, close to the white center. [image below]
Assembly (watch video tutorial here):
Hair Pin: Determine which direction the pin should face open depending on your hair part (the fruit should be right side up with the straight edge facing upwards). Open your pin and carefully line the top with hot glue. Press the fruit slice down and hold for a few seconds until dry.
Be careful not to touch the metal pin as it may be hot!
Hair Tie: Cut a small circle of felt in the same main color as the fruit slice. Position the fruit slice at an angle as you hold it against the hair tie. Then, dab some hot glue onto the back and secure on the felt circle.
(Optional): If you have more time, you can sew the felt onto the fruit slice with thread for a more polished look. [images below]
