Free Crochet Pattern - No-Sew Baby Otter

This (almost) no-sew baby otter is the cutest add-on for my Free Sea Otter pattern

MATERIALS:

  • #3 light worsted yarn - here, I'm using Scheepjes stonewashed in Axinite (831) and Brown Agave (822)
  • 2.25 mm hook
  • Scissors, stitch marker, yarn needle
  • Stuffing
  • Brown embroidery thread

 

TERMS: 

    • blo - back loops only
    • dec - (invisible) decrease
    • flo - front loops only
    • inc - increase
    • ps - puff stitch
      • Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull through. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Repeat until you have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all of the loops on the hook. When you sc into the next st, push the "puff" so it faces out.

  • rnd(s) – round(s)
  • [#] – stitch count
  • (…) x # – repeat the instructions within the parentheses # of times

HEAD/BODY (start in tan yarn): 

Rnd 1: Make a magic circle and (sc) x6 [6]

Rnd 2: (inc) x6 [12]

Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x6 [18]

Rnds 4-6 (3 rnds total): sc all around [18]

Rnd 7: (sc, dec) x6 [12]

 

Change to brown yarn. 

 

Rnd 8: (flo) - sc all around [12]

Rnd 9: sc all around [12]

Rnd 10: 4 sc, ps, sc into the next st to complete the puff, sc into the next st, ps, sc into the next st to complete the puff, 3 sc [12]

Rnd 11-12 (2 rnds total): sc all around [12]

 

Because we are working in a spiral, add or undo a couple sts as needed to align the legs with the arms. 

 

Rnd 13: 4 sc, ps, sc into the next st to complete the puff, sc into the next st, ps, sc into the next st to complete the puff, 3 sc [12]

 

We will create loops to crochet the tail into in the next rnd.

Stuff.

 

Rnd 14: (blo) - 4 sc, (in both loops) - 8 sc [12]

Rnd 15: (dec) x6 [6]

 

Fasten off and leave a tail. Go through the flo with your yarn needle and cinch the hole closed. 

 

TAIL (in brown yarn): 

*Note: Center the tail with the body just as you did with the legs.



Row 1: Holding the otter upside down, insert new yarn and make 4 sc in the loops left in rnd 13. DON'T ch 1. Turn. [4]

 

 

Row 2: 3 sc, turn [3]

Row 3: 2 sc, turn [2]

Row 4: sc [1]

 

Fasten off and leave a short tail for weaving in. 

 

EARS (make two in brown yarn): 

Rnd 1: Make a magic circle and 2 sc [2]

 

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. 

 

Sew each ear onto the head between rnds 3-4 of the head. 

 

FACIAL FEATURES: 

*Note: Cut a long strand of dark brown embroidery thread. If you have the kind that has 6 strands, unravel 2 of them so that it's thinner. 

 

Nose: Create the nose between rnds 5-6, 1 st wide. Go over it 3x to make the nose thicker.  

 

Eyes: Create each sleepy eye 1 st away from the nose between the same rnds.

 

You're finished!
